About SchoolMigrate

An independent, solo-curated educational resource built by Usman Ali to help K-12 schools navigate Student Information System migrations safely, legally, and without losing critical student data.

Why This Site Exists

School data migration is one of the most stressful technology transitions in education. Student transcripts accumulated over years, staff payroll records, special education documentation, and legal compliance archives all need to move from one system to another โ€” often under tight deadlines and with confusing vendor documentation.

I started SchoolMigrate after spending months researching how to move student records between platforms for a school I was helping. I found that vendor guides were written for engineers, consultant resources were locked behind paywalls, and generic IT migration frameworks completely ignored the unique regulatory requirements of educational data โ€” particularly FERPA in the United States and GDPR for international schools.

There was no single place where a school administrator or IT coordinator could find plain-language guidance on the full migration lifecycle. So I built one.

Our Mission

To provide every K-12 school and district with access to practical, well-researched migration guidance and compliance resources โ€” regardless of budget or technical expertise โ€” so that no school has to navigate a Student Information System transition blindly.

About the Editor

SchoolMigrate is a solo research project maintained by one person with a deep interest in educational technology and data management. I am not a certified migration consultant or licensed attorney โ€” this site is a curated knowledge base, not professional consulting advice. Every guide is built from primary sources, vendor documentation, and hours of hands-on research.

Usman Ali

Founder, Editor & Researcher

I built SchoolMigrate after personally experiencing how difficult it is to find clear, vendor-neutral guidance for school data migrations. Over the past year, I have spent 200+ hours researching SIS export procedures, studying FERPA and GDPR documentation, and documenting platform-specific workflows so other school staff don't have to start from scratch.

I am not a certified data engineer or legal consultant. I am a researcher who believes that school administrators, registrars, and IT coordinators deserve better documentation than what software vendors typically provide. When a topic exceeds my expertise โ€” particularly complex legal questions โ€” I cite official regulatory sources and recommend consulting qualified professionals.

Research focus: Student Information System architecture, data export formats (CSV, XML, API), FERPA ยง99 compliance during transfers, and cross-platform gradebook migration workflows.

Editorial Transparency

This is a one-person research project. All technical guidance is cross-referenced against official vendor documentation and regulatory sources before publication. I welcome corrections from certified IT professionals and education attorneys, and I update articles within 48 hours of verified errors. For complex legal questions involving FERPA or GDPR, I always recommend consulting a qualified education attorney or certified privacy professional.

Our Editorial Standards

Even as a solo project, SchoolMigrate follows a strict quality process to ensure every guide and checklist is accurate, actionable, and legally sound. This is how I maintain trust with readers and comply with the standards expected by search engines and advertising partners.

1

Primary Source Research

Every technical claim is verified against official documentation: PowerSchool export guides, Canvas SIS integration docs, FERPA regulations (34 CFR Part 99), and GDPR Articles 6 and 17. I do not rely on second-hand forum posts or AI summaries alone.

2

Hands-On Testing

Where possible, I test export procedures and data mapping steps using demo or sandbox environments before publishing platform-specific guides. Screenshots and step sequences reflect actual interface states, not mockups.

3

Annual Updates

Platform-specific guides are reviewed and updated at least once per year or whenever a major vendor release changes the migration workflow. Every article displays a "Last Updated" date at the top of the page.

4

No Vendor Bias

I do not accept paid placement or sponsored content from SIS vendors. Platform comparisons are based on independent technical evaluation โ€” API availability, export flexibility, and migration support quality โ€” not advertising relationships.

5

Privacy by Design

The interactive checklist tool on our homepage runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. I do not collect, store, or transmit any school data you enter. No third-party analytics cookies load without your consent.

6

Corrections Policy

If a reader identifies a technical or legal error, I commit to correcting it within 48 hours and documenting the change in the article's update log. You can report inaccuracies through the Contact page.
